Amusing Times [Nov. 19th, 2009|11:43 pm]
[Current Mood | happy]

Well, there are a lot of random things. I feel like I've been laughing harder than I have in a long time for some reason. I wasn't depressed, but you know how when you're around certain people and doing certain things, you just feel...happier? Like you're enjoying yourself more and you start forgetting about the things you used to worry about? That's kinda what's been happening to me lately. I still get my cranky moments, but man, it feels so good to laugh till it hurts.

The adult school has been one source of this. It's funny because I sometimes start off feeling like I don't want to go. Sometimes it's cuz I'm doing something else or I don't feel like giving up three hours of my evening to go help teach English, but I always end up making myself go anyways. Because one- people are expecting me to be there even if I don't HAVE to. Two- I need the teaching experience, really. If I'm going to make it abroad, I have to practice now. Three- if I don't go, I'm just going to be sitting at the computer all day or finding some other way to waste time while I bum around jobless. At least volunteering is time well spent that you won't regret. And FOUR- people appreciate me there. It's one thing to go volunteer because you think you should, but when people are so happy to see you and fun to talk to, that really just makes it worth it. Even though I zone out sometimes or glance at the clock wondering how much time I have before going back to my cozy house, I still have a good time, and in the end, I'm happy I came.

Plus, the students are a blast. :XD: I know I'm easily amused, but they're really fun to talk to and watch. I love it when the Asian students and the Hispanic students interact because they both come from such different cultures, but they're trying to communicate in English (and are usually laughing at each other along the way). Today we were talking about pasta, and one of the Chinese students didn't understand what it meant, so this Mexican guy says, "CHOW MEIN!" And of course, this triggers the other Chinese students with a round of "chow mein" with lots of smiles.

I laughed so hard today in class. I don't know if it's as funny now as it was then, but the students have been studying nutrition lately, so we're learning all the food groups and such. Well today, they were learning to say "I like -insert food-" and "I don't like -insert food-". The students had to introduce another student and tell the class their likes and dislikes and then introduce themselves and share their own preferences. Well, this one Hispanic lady was following the example sentences that say, "Yes, I like blahblahblah," but she reversed the order a bit, so it came out something like this-

"My name is Maria. I like pizza, yeeeessss. I like hamburgers, yessssss."

Just the tone she used and the way she said it had everyone (including the teacher) cracking up. We weren't making fun of her, of course, just laughing with her. It was great. :lmao:

After break, we walked to the supermarket and gave the students a tour. They had to write down the names of different kinds of food and how much they cost. I took my own group into the fruits and veggies and led them around, pointing out food and explaining them as best I could while they scribbled away. I loved the other shopper's reactions to us.

"Yes, these are APPLES. There are lots of different kinds of APPLES. Make sure you write down what kind of apple it is, because some are more expensive than others. *switch to Spanish* The more expensive ones are more delicious." :iconapplesplz:

I learn interesting stuff in that class myself. For example, I never knew why "lb." was used for pound. My sister and I used to say "lub" when we were small. :XD: It turns out it's because of the Latin word "libra" which is the same as the word for pound in Spanish. Yay, information! According to the teacher, the "@" symbol was created by combining an "a" and "e" from "each". Like, in the old days, there would be signs for fruit that said, "Apples, $0.65 @." I had no idea. Makes you wonder how it got used for email addresses instead. The teacher said after that, it was replaced with "ea".

I think my other source of happiness right now besides the tablet I'm having fun messing with (though the coloring is taking me forever), is the fanfic I'm writing for Smash Bros. The chapter I wrote last night actually had me snickering as I typed, a good feeling. I'm calling it "Icarus" as a working title, but I don't know if I'll want to change it eventually. I've passed 50 pages by now and am just almost through the introduction/set-up. Once I get to the more episodic part of the story and fix up what I've already got, I'll post it. For the rest of this month, though, I just want to focus as getting as far as I can. Wish me luck! :)

No word on the job yet. If Planet Pooch doesn't respond by this weekend, I'll have to start looking again. -_-; Job searching is so annoying. Hearing back from Japan sure would put me in a good mood right now. :P

Anyways, I'm off! Chai tea and a hot shower is waiting for me. Catcha later~

Job Delimma [Nov. 17th, 2009|01:21 am]

[Current Mood | worried]

So I've been applying to random places somewhat half-heartedly because I know I NEED a job before April so I can save for start-up costs if I get into Japan. But so far, the only one that's offered me an interview is Planet Pooch, the same doggy daycare place my sister worked at last summer. She HATED it. Not the job so much, just the manager/supervisor person. He was really mean to her (somewhat verbally abusive and impatient) and not so kind to the dogs either (he shoved one up against the fence for misbehaving). I have a problem with people getting mad at me, and I knew if this guy was to give me any trouble, I probably wouldn't be able to handle it. At the same time, I want to be strong and deal with it if it comes to that. I can't help being a people pleaser and wanting everyone to treat me kindly, but I know it's not always going to be like that, and I'm going to have to deal with a jerk sooner or later. Still, I wonder if this job is worth it. I think I might go to the interview just to try it out. I can always quit if the situation gets too bad...right?

Alternatively, I applied to a cat inn. I know I'd love this more since I'm a cat person, but it's kinda far from where I live and I haven't heard back from them yet. If they offer me this job, I'd probably take it over Planet Pooch, but if I have enough time, I'd probably do both. I have 4 months to save up at least $3000 ^^;

I don't want to work for the school district because even though it pays better, I don't want to have them relying on me for the whole school year when I'm only staying till April if all goes well.

Sorry for the rambling. :P I just need to write this down somewhere...I'm curious to hear your opinions too. X3

Loltastic Tidbits...sorta [Nov. 11th, 2009|12:32 am]

[Current Mood | silly]

Tonight in the ESL class, we teaching the students about the food pyramid. They had to make their own food pyramid, so they were looking through magazines for pictures to cut and paste. One of the students asked me what "peanuts" meant...I totally thought he said something else. ._. As I was trying to figure out a way to explain it without being vulgar, I asked him where he had heard it, and he showed me his worksheet with the example of the food groups. Embarrassment averted. ^^;

As I'm on a huge Super Smash Bros. Brawl kick, I've been trying to build up a lot of inspiration to write a new fanfic. I wanted to practice fighting as Marth yesterday, so I played against a lv. 7 King Dedede on the Smashville Stage. Marth is quick and dainty, the penguin is slow and fat, and yet, he was still beating me. As he stood on one side of the stage, and I on the other, I thought, "I really don't want to lose to this guy..." Suddenly, a bunny hood appeared near him. Immediately, I screamed "IT'S MINE!!!" and had Marth make a mad dash for it. The prince smacked King Dedede so hard with his sword that the penguin went flying off the stage, bounced off the platform above him, and plummeted down to his death instantly. In the same sweep, Marth grabbed the bunny hood and put it on his head, standing triumphantly at the edge of the stage. It was a proud moment.

Don't mess with Marth and his bunny hood!

Apparently Ike has some fascination with chicken. I'm pretty sure this is a fandom thing; I don't remember anything about it from Path of Radiance, but he eats chicken in a good number of fan videos (and fanart too, I bet). I think it's hilarious, especially in the Ouran spoof. He even does a dance with it. :XD:

I have dragon slippers like these. I had to get them in extra large so they'd fit my big feet. Everyone who sees them makes fun of them; most of them just laugh, like my aunt who couldn't get over them. My dad stuck his foot in one and started skidding away. I love my dragon slippers and have yet to figure out a name for each one. You can tell them apart because one of their heads sticks straight up and the other views the world sideways.

If you like Zelda, you might get a kick out of this.I've listened to that song too many times, but this skit was brilliant.

Technology still hates me. I'm getting a "new" cellphone tomorrow. Actually, it's a blue Motorolla kzr that I found on craig's list. I just need something to get me to April, really. XD; Then, if all goes well, I'll be in Japan and will have to get a Japanese cellphone...which will probably hate me as much as my American one. Except it will hate me in Japanese.

The stupid computer I'm on likes to turn off randomly. This is a big problem for when I'm trying to write. I want my laptop back. T_T Tonight, the computer decided it wanted to shut off but actually went through the whole shutting down process for once. I didn't tell it to do this. I lost the chunk of fanfic I had written after my last save and my ears died a death of epic music when it was blasted by the Fire Emblem theme when youtube came back up in the restored session.

I know I'm not all that amusing, but better to post something than sit here wondering why my journal's been so boring lately when life is good. ;P

Con Times Return! [Nov. 4th, 2009|11:59 am]
[Tags|]
[Current Mood | hungry]

So, I went to Yaoi-Con last weekend just for a day. It was fun to get to wear Pit again! I spent several days beforehand trying to fix him up. The swords were the area of most concern. XD; I cut out the middle sections and reinforced them with wooden dowels and rigid wrap. I also fixed the magnets at the bottom. I'm glad it wasn't too heavy for them to work!

My friends Stacy and Jocelyn met up with me at the con and we had a lot of fun together! I got to cohost my first panel- SHOWDOWN. Pretty much, it was a bracket-style competition where 8 contestants on each side (uke and seme) battle their way to the top through reason and debate to see who ends up together- either the worst crack pairing ever or perhaps maybe even...the ultimate OTP?! XD I was so happy Kakashi won for seme! I can't remember the uke's name unfortunately. The audience got pretty into it and Stacy was a good host and very entertaining. I just kinda sat there looking pretty most of the time (chairs are not so wing-friendly), but it was still cool being up in front. For participating, the people got free pens and paper pads! Courtesy of the Marriott (actually, they were just there for the panels).

The rest of the con consisted of mostly shopping, eating, and general hanging out, as is common at most small cons. I bought a green Kakashi Gaiden shirt with young Kakashi on it running with his chidori and a KakaIru doujinshi. It's sad to think this is the last con I might get to go to for a long time if I go teach abroad and I still had to hold back. ;_; Maybe I'll be able to find something in Japan, but I'm pretty sure cons are much different there, and I don't even know if I'll be able to take any of my cosplays with me. XD; Maybe I can time a trip back to the States during con season... "Hi Mom, Hi Dad, HELLO COSPLAY!!!" XDDD

The last thing we did at Y-con before heading to Japantown for even more shopping and yum-mays was take a photo shoot outside in the courtyard. I'm so happy to have more pictures of myself as Pit! :D I still have to dig up EBK's too. He snagged me not long after I entered the con and was like "Where were you yesterday?" >:( Umm....trick-or-treating?

Anyway, outside photo shoot was fun. I was so excited to see columns holding up the gazebo (Helllloooo Skyworld). We got a Twilight Princess Link to join in the fun for a bit while we took some shots in there. I also created my own photo story with the help of Stacy and a muffin kindly donated by the volunteer's brunch. Check it out below!

No yaoi, unless you ship PUFFIN (PitxMuffin):

So much fun! I hope it's not too long before I get to go to another con...

Caesar Chavez is Watching You... [Oct. 10th, 2009|01:29 am]
[Tags|]
[Current Mood | amused]

It's been two weeks since I started tutoring ESL, and I think it's going pretty well. I'm building up my confidence, which is a big relief. I don't want to be nervous about teaching when it's what I'm going to be doing for the next year or so. Yesterday, the teacher told me that she thinks the students are warming up to me, which makes me feel fantastic. I was worried that they weren't going to like me taking over the class now and then, when the teacher does such a better job of it than I can. But they're a really nice bunch. Some of them are really friendly, and I get asked for help by the same people often. There's this really quiet Korean man that I wish I could talk to more. He seems very smart, always repeating everything correctly, and I think he'll pick up the language fast, but he's not much of a speaker. Whenever someone talks to him in English, he just nods and doesn't really seem to understand the words so I guess it must be really new to him. Or he might just be insecure. I know I'm that way with Japanese sometimes. I get scared I won't understand, and the words go in one ear and out the other even though if I had listened, I'd know what they meant. I'm sure it'll just take some time. I wish I knew some Korean!

I get to just Spanish a lot since over half the students are Mexican or from Spanish-speaking countries. I know I butcher it, though. I tried to tell the story of the dog statue, Hachiko, which I know I would have been better at telling in English. I usually find a way to make myself understood, though. I taught for a full hour yesterday, since the teacher had to go to a meeting and rather than dismiss the class early, she left me in charge for the people who wanted to stay. It wasn't too bad with the help of the SMART BOARD (which can also be a real pain sometimes when I'm trying to scroll around the page). I went over some of the handout pages about different rooms of the house and what's in them. I think it was my best teaching experience so far. I got the class to follow with me, read stuff to them, and had them work on some of the exercises. I think I'm getting better at playing some of the charade games that I have going on up there while I'm trying to explain things. I'm trying to get used to using a lot of hand gestures and giving them some visuals along with the words I'm speaking.

My voice is getting better. I still lower it sometimes, but it's usually just to make a little side comment for the closer people to laugh at. I think I still need to work on clarity a little bit. Giving directions is actually harder than it looks, and I'm afraid people don't understand what I want from them sometimes. They didn't seem too excited when I told them to pair up and read to their partner, but I got them to do it anyway. Some of the students are really shy too, and it's hard to get them to participate when they're too afraid to come up and risk embarrassment. I can't blame them though. I was usually pretty quiet in the classroom and rarely volunteered to get up in front of everyone unless I was 100% sure I was right. There is a poster of Caesar Chavez near the door of the classroom though, and the teacher made me laugh by telling one of the shy students, "Come on. Caesar Chavez is watching you..."

The teacher didn't come back from her teacher's meeting until class was well over, but I stayed behind to help some students and then started shutting things down while I waited for her. One of the students was really nice and told me I was a good teacher. Maybe I'll really start feeling like one soon. I'm happy that at least I'm getting better; I really want to go to the Interac seminar feeling like a pro with this experience under my belt. I've felt under qualified for so long, it feels really good to be getting rid of some of that insecurity and replacing it with confidence.

Meanwhile, I'm preparing for the seminar at home, gathering materials and planning my teaching demonstration. My diploma finally came in the mail! I feel like a real graduate now. I still need to get some passport photos and minor things, but it looks like everything will be easy to get together.

Lesson planning makes me feel so silly. :XD: I need a quick warm-up activity, so I've decided to sing the Days of the Week song. I have to interact with my invisible class, and get them ready for their English lesson. The actual lesson has yet to be planned. The company did send a demo video out, though, so I think I'm going to stick to that and throw in some extra props. I wish I had a bit more quiet time around the house so I could lock myself in my room and sound silly without anyone hearing my loud teacher voice through the door. XP I think I'll try to video-tape myself before the seminar to see how I look and maybe even ask the ESL teacher if I can try it on her class. I still need to figure out my Japanese introduction too...I think the less Japanese I use the better, honestly, because even though I'm at an intermediate level, I'm worried about blanking out from nervousness. ^^; I will work on my pronunciation though, so hopefully that'll impress them.

Random- my dad practically forced a stereo on me today. It's an old one that plays cassette tapes and the radio. It also has detachable speakers and lots of adjusters for the sound. He came into my room and had me hook it up, and I was actually pretty impressed by how good it sounds. The funny thing was, I've been missing my old stereo that I don't even remember what happened with. I like to draw and read in my room, so I'm happy to have some music in the background now. ^^

That's all for now. Laters~

ESL Tutoring [Sep. 30th, 2009|01:40 am]
[Tags|]
[Current Mood | hopeful]

It's been a week since I started working with ESL students at the adult school. So far, I've only gone in twice; from now on, I'm going to try to volunteer every Tues and Thurs. The teacher is really nice. She's originally from Taiwan and can speak 7 different languages, I think. She's pretty amazing. A really good teacher too! I feel like I can learn a lot from just watching her. She uses a lot of hand gestures and charades to get her students to understand her. I think she even throws some sign language in there. The classroom also has this wondrous thing called the Smart Board. At first, I was like "What's so smart about it? It's just a screen for the projector." But NO. This thing is fully interactive. It's like a giant touchscreen computer. There's a program called the Smart Notebook and you can drag things around, draw in different colors, and do all kinds of crazy things that you'd have to see for yourself because it's hard to explain in writing. Even my fancy college classrooms with multiple projector screens that came out of the ceiling and remote control blinds didn't have something as cool as this.

The students come from a bunch of different countries. Most of them are Spanish-speaking, which helps when they're stuck and I need to help them understand something. My Spanish is kinda sad when it comes to practical usage, though. I realize my vocabulary is limited and I feel more worried about making mistakes when I'm talking to someone besides my mom. It doesn't help that most of the Spanish-speaking students are from Mexico, and Mexican Spanish is different from my South American Spanish, so even when I think I'm making sense, I'm not. ^^; There are also students from China and Korea in our class, which is cool. I really wish there were some Japanese students so I could practice that language, but alas, not this semester.

The teacher kinda threw me up there in front of the class today. I had mentioned to her that I was nervous about the seminar I'm going to for the Japan teaching program coming up in Oct. because I have to give a short lesson for part of it and I've never taught before. She offered to let me teach part of her class, but I didn't feel confident enough, so I was giving her the "yeah, well, maybe" answer because I wanted to watch her for another week at least before I gave it a shot. But noooo. She let me open up the class and then I continued with the lesson from there. I must have looked like such a fool trying to teach, but I'm still glad I did it. I really just need to keep trying until I get it right and then the seminar will seem like no sweat because instead of feeling like I'm not good enough, I'll feel over-qualified. :XD: Or at least more qualified than I would have been. :ninja:

Teaching is hard. I didn't expect otherwise. I think part of my problem is just getting comfortable with the idea of being in control. I still don't know what my limits are. I don't know how far I can take my authority, what I can make the students do, etc. because when it comes down to it, it still isn't MY class. Fortunately since these are adults and they're not being forced to be there, I don't have to worry about discipline or anything like that. It's hard for me to think on my feet when I get stuck or I know I'm not making any sense. Sometimes I forget these aren't fluent English speakers and I have to wonder about which words they know and what needs to be explained. The class I'm volunteering in has a range of levels. Some can read and write, some can speak better than others, and some haven't even had a full education in their own countries. I've only been there twice so I'm still learning who I'm dealing with.

There are people who will say things with me and read everything I write out loud. There are other people who will stay completely silent even when most of the class is repeating stuff out loud, and I'm not sure if they're confused or just shy.

I'm relieved that I don't have a problem with voice projection. I'm quiet by nature, but I can be loud when I need to be. The only problem is that sometimes I trail off or drop my voice down to normal level when I'm not 100% sure of what I'm saying. It's something I have to work on cuz I don't want to confuse anyone. I also worry about the tone now and then. It's not hard for me to sound commanding, but I don't want to sound harsh or condescending. I try to sound friendlier when I'm talking to individual students, but I notice my voice sounds pretty forceful when I'm showing them how to pronounce things. I'm not sure if this is as bad as I think.

I also need to be more comfortable with being silly. I've been in an adult environment too long. I don't think I'm a serious person by far, but I feel awkward opening up to people older than me and showing them my crazier side. I think part of me is also afraid of offending them somehow, like I'll insult their intelligence if I treat them like kids. But there's no easier way to learn than to have fun doing it, and that's not going to happen with just a lot of reading and repetition alone. I look forward to the time when we get to play more games. The teacher mentioned that there are a lot of actives like that when the students need to be woken up a bit. They're learning body parts right now, so she brought up "Simon Says." I don't know if I'll actually get to play it with them, though. Being there is fun, but it kind of overwhelms me, so having a break in between the days that I go in feels good. Maybe I'll come in more often later, though, if there's something going on or if I feel like I need more practice. I also don't want to subject the students to my poor teaching skills more than twice a week in case they start wishing their real teacher was in charge all the time. ^^; I hope they don't mind an amateur getting in some practice now and then...

The teacher says to become a better teacher, I should critique myself- find out what worked, what didn't. I feel like my failures outweigh my success today, but at least I tried. I liked the way I mixed things up a bit during the "there is" vs. "there are" portion of the lesson. I had a desk full of stuff, and I kept holding up items in various quantities. Later, I incorporated adjectives like color or size and even added two different things together (one tray and two die, ect). I feel like my own English skills are being challenged at times. I wasn't sure whether to ask "How many die are there?" or "How many dice are there?" for a moment, especially when I was only holding one. There are the occasional brain farts when writing too. I already lack board-writing skills (I produce mostly-legible words with letters of varying sizes and crooked sentences) so when you through spelling in there too, it becomes a small disaster. I think spell check has ruined me with dependence. I blanked on the spelling of "ninth" for a second. Some words are so easy to type, but when you have to write them out, your memory just fails on you. I don't think I'm the only one this happens to. I think one possible cure for this is to write things out more often in notebooks and stuff so I can keep tabs on which words give me trouble. Doubt doesn't look good coming from a teacher.

Anyway, that's enough babbling out of me. I just want to keep a record of what I'm learning about teaching, so forgive me if there are more of these self-critique journals in the future. Hope everyone's enjoying their last bit of September! Goodbye, O lovely birthday month! T_T

Why Sleep is Recommended [Sep. 30th, 2009|01:38 am]
[Tags|]
[Current Mood | amused]

This actually happened quite a few days ago, but I thought it deserved its own little journal spotlight. Maybe it was funnier then than it is now, but it still amuses me. I was up really late one night on the computer despite the fact that I had to be up early the next morning to go fix up my old house that we're trying to find tenants for. I'm also not the early-rising type. My body seems to be set go to sleep sometime between 2-4 am and wake up from 11-1 depending on which time I actually got to bed. That morning, I went to bed around 4, got up at 7:30. So of course, I was kinda out of it- not really sleepy thanks to breakfast, but not as alert as I am later in the day.

Anyway, my cat was waiting for me on the stairs like he usually does when he wants me to feed him. I put on a jacket and slipped my feet into the dubbed "cursed sandals" (I'll explain their history later). They're black Sketchers sandals with soles that are about an inch thick. I barely take three steps down when all of a sudden-! I'm sliding down the stairs on my butt and my flailing hands manage to catch a hold of the handrail and the slanted beam on the other side, but instead of stopping me, my hands keep sliding down along with me. They kept my upper body from hitting the stairs but my poor backside is aching in pain by the time I finally hit the bottom. I was so out of it that I didn't even realize I was falling at first. I just got to the bottom and was like "WOW. I just fell down the stairs." And meanwhile, my cat is watching me from the top like "If you're done messing around, I'd like my breakfast now." :-\

I wasn't really hurt or anything. I just kinda felt amused and maybe a bit sorry for myself. :XD: Those sandals have been lying in wait, I tell you. I knew it was only a matter of time before they struck again. :ninja: There was an incident a couple years ago. I remember it was when the first Pirates of the Caribbean came out because my cousin and I were at the movie theater. My mom dropped us off in the back and went to go find parking. Meanwhile, we were late to the movie, so we started running. Those stupid sandals tripped me and I fell onto the sidewalk and scraped all the skin off my knee. It was a bloody mess. The worse part was, I didn't have time to go wash it off so it stayed like that the whole movie, and when I got home, I had to peel my pants off the wound because the blood had dried and it was all sticky. :( Yuck!

Anyway, that's the story. I'll be more careful with the cursed sandals from now on (and get more sleep). I barely wear them except to go downstairs to the garage once in a while. The last time I tried to walk anywhere in them for more than a few feet, they gave my foot a nasty blister. Maybe one day they'll have tasted enough blood. :stab:

The Comfy Life [Sep. 21st, 2009|04:02 am]
[Tags|]
[Current Mood | mellow]

That's what I feel like I have right now. Sure it's not all fun and games. I still have my future to worry about and whatnot. But in comparison to how things have been in LIFE so far, I feel like the number of responsibilities has dropped. I'm done with school, so there's no classes or papers to worry about. Of course, this means I have those moments where I feel like I should be doing something when I can't think of anything that needs to be done right away. I can get away with doing nothing but reading and playing video games most days. I've finally had a chance to catch up on books I've wanted to read. Still keeping up the Warriors series for the love of cats, but sometimes I want to take those kiddie novels and smack the authors over the head (or something less violent). I still don't have a character that I really like. They all either do stupid things or get killed off. The action's been surprisingly good, though. I notice I get bored sometimes because it doesn't feel like it did in the beginning when everything was new and it was all about exploring these CATS and their clans and how they live. XDDD I feel silly taking junior novels so seriously, but I can't help it. >< Maybe I feel like it has more potential than what the authors are doing with it. It was weird going back to Warriors after finishing Tamora Pierce's "Beka Cooper:Terrier." A young adult book, but still much different of course. I really liked it too! I tried to read it before but it was harder to get into because I was all like "Wow, these chapters are LONG." and I don't like having to stop at a bad spot. I was on a roll these last few weeks though and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Looking forward to the next one if I can get my hands on it.

The room has been TRANSFORMED. Since my sister went back to college, I've slowly been taking over the space we use to share. Now the bed's pushed up against the window and I have FOUR mattresses stacked on top of it to imitate a loft bed like the one I had in the dorms for some of those years. It's pretty precarious sometimes, and I have to do a safety check every night, but I love it. It's like the Princess and the Pea. Only instead of a pea, I have things like...stuffed animals. The space where my bed was on the floor is now shrunk and boxed in. I put the extra pillows and blankets down there to make it comfy so now it's like a "lounging nook," only it looks like a dog bed. :P I think one of my favorite additions to the room is the TV. XD I don't get any channels in there so it's just for gaming, but still- happy days. Now if only I can get myself away from Fire Emblem long enough to do something creatively productive. ^^;

Work with my dad continues. I think I'll have to find myself a real job soon. I need to start saving up for the start-up costs of moving abroad. I'll be leaving in March whether I go to Japan or Korea, so I have time.

The seminar for Interac is my only big source of stress right now. I really want to make sure I'm prepared so I do well and get chosen. Some days I feel confident enough, but others I'm kinda freaking out imagining having to give a short lesson in front of a bunch of strangers and being interviewed thoroughly. There is one thing I'm grateful for, and that is NO GROUP INTERVIEWS. GAH. I got scarred for life after this one group interview I went to for a company daycare where almost all my answers were horrible if I even HAD an answer to give. I reeeeaaally hate being stuck on questions. The ones that give me the most trouble are "tell me about a time when..." :dead: hatehatehate Not only am I too stressed to think, but I must rack my brain for an experience I'm not even sure is still recorded in my History of Life, if I ever had an experience that fits the prompt at all. X_x They're usually work-related, and the only jobs I've had were more or less conflict-free, thank goodness. I don't have a lot of experiences where I've argued with a co-worker, etc, etc, mostly due to the fact that at the media library, I worked ALOOOONE. :XD: Ahhh geez, I just really hope I don't get stuck. I always feel better if I have a bottle of water to wet my throat if it gets tightened up.

I wonder if things will get even more mellow after the seminar's done, and I have 5 months or so before I can go anywhere. I really will need a job. :\

I volunteered to tutor adult ESL students in hopes of gaining some teaching experience before the seminar. I dragged myself to the training even though I've been sick with a cold these last few days, and I'm supposed to start this week, but the supervisor hasn't gotten back to me yet. I hope I'll like it. I think it'll be fun to meet people with different cultural backgrounds and help them learn my language. Maybe I can even talk to them in Spanish or Japanese (with sentences chopped up like sushi :sushi: ). I'll let you know how it goes.

It's funny that the moment I get sick is when I start being more social. Granted I was out of commission for maybe half a day (I'm built tough like that); even though it was pretty bad, it didn't keep me cooped up in the house at all. I was pretty much inhaling cough drops the whole time(finished a bag of Ricola, and halfway through the cheapo ones), but the day after the training, some friends and I made some sushi at my house and had kinda a girl's night out. I finally got to use those sick masks that people where all over Japan. I didn't want to contaminate the food. The museum in San Francisco has a thing called Night Life on Thursdays where they only let people 21 and over in after regular hours are over and they serve drinks too. After exploring the place till it closed, we went to a crepe place in the city for dessert. I tried egg puffs for the first time. They were really good! They're supposed to be really big in Hong Kong, lol. I had chocolate-flavored ones, and they kinda reminded me of waffles, only the outside was crisp and crunchy and there was a little pocket of air where the soft part was hidden. Good stuff. If I hadn't been all congested I would have had an ice cream crepe though, cuz those things were cheap! In Japantown they're at least $2 more. XD

Yesterday I was feeling a bit better. They opened a new Nubi Yogurt in SF, which is like my FAVORITE self-serve yogurt place ever, partly because it was the first one I ever tried. Their flavors and toppings are good, though, and it's usually pretty easy to find a coupon so I don't have to pay $5 for my ridiculously large topping-happy cups. This place had 50% off all day celebrating their opening, plus, they gave out free t-shirts after the ribbon-cutting ceremony. My friend Marissa and I snagged some and were both really happy with them. We also stopped for a sushi snack in a Japanese restaurant around there since it was happy hour and the rolls were pretty cheap. I can't wait to wear my Nubi shirt! :boogie:The design is great. I love shirts with stuff on the back. The logo is on the front across the chest and the back has bubbles with icon pictures on them for stuff like yogurt, toppings, and fruit. :D You'd have to see it, but it looks pretty cool!

My aunt's puppy was also here. He's super-cute! Looks more like a toy than a dog, but I like him. I looked after him for a good chunk of the day, played with him, and took him on a short walk. Our dog, Phoebe was acting really weird around him because she wasn't sure what to make of that ball of fluff. She just kinda wagged her tail and had all the hair from her neck to her tail standing up like a mohawk. I think she musta felt kinda awkward or something. XD The puppy, Max, stayed in the kitchen all day. He was pretty good for the most part especially by puppy standards. He got the cage treatment a few times. He likes to bite and latched onto my socks, pants, and the tablecloth. He also made love to my leg. I don't think this dog's even two months old.

That's all for tonight. Sorry for the rambling, but I thought all this info was best recorded in one place. That's life for now; let's see how it changes. Till next time~

Two TWOS~! YAY [Sep. 5th, 2009|08:55 pm]

[Current Mood | happy]

Birthday's been fun~! I camped out on the couch last night because I was up playing video games until I was too tired to keep my eyes open and I figured I'd be less likely to sleep away my morning if I wasn't locked up in my room. My dad gave me a cool cushion that he got at Cost Plus, so it looks all ethnic. It's very comfy! I called it my throne and sat on it during breakfast. It made me so tall that my heels didn't touch the floor anymore. :laughingL: I felt like such a little kid. My mom made pancakes for breakfast and stuck a candle in mine. My parents sang me happy birthday and we had some delicious strawberry yogurt and jam. After that, I sorted through my room a bit (planning to revamp it soon since my sister left) and played some more Fire Emblem, picking up from last night.

For lunch, I got to go to Japantown and eat sukiyaki at the Shabu-shabu restaurant. It was soooo good! Even better cuz I was starving since the pancakes. :XD: My mom and I walked around a bit and ate a crepe with green tea, red bean, whipped cream, and strawberries. I love the food there. I also got a melon soda ramune! I also saw a KAKASHI GAIDEN shirt at Kinokuniya, but alas, they didn't have my size. Maybe I'll look for it elsewhere or go back and buy one as a pajama. ^^; There's a green young Kakashi shirt online, I've been eying, so maybe I'll go for that one instead.

After that, we went to the supermarket, got some groceries (including the buffalo hot wing sauce that I've been craving for a while), and came back home. That's pretty much where I am now. I've got a couple of calls today from friends and relatives~! Thanks to everyone who gave me happy birthday wishes! My relatives will probably have a bigger birthday party next weekend for my dad and I. It's been kinda quiet this year because my sister's at school and my brother's at camp. Still fun, though! I'm happy to be 22! :boogie:

Summer in September [Sep. 4th, 2009|01:31 am]
[Tags|]
[Current Mood | happy]

I can't believe summer is almost over! Well, for the people who had to go back to school, it probably feels like it's ended already. I feel like I should've been writing more journal entries, but I've been pretty lazy about it, as usual. I enjoy it when I actually start typing, but until then, it feels like a chore, since I know I'm going to end up writing an essay. Tonight, I'm forced to keep it short because I have to wake up to go to work with my dad, so here's the Abridged Update on Life:

My translation project is finally done with an EPIC FINISH. I am such a horrible procrastinator. I've been hoping to grow out of it and return to the more responsible habits of my youth, but noooooooo! Maybe I'm fooling myself into thinking there was a time when I didn't do things last minute. My cover was drawn pretty quick, and I colored it the same day I took the whole story to be bound. I handed them the pile of papers with the purple-haired guy and green cat in front. The lady at Office Depot was very amused and told me that she liked it. I was flattered and embarrassed at the same time. XD; Anyway, I overnighted the thing because I was worried that I wasn't going to make the deadline, and my sensei had to take a sudden trip to Japan, so she wasn't there to sign for the package. So there was a delay in the grading, obviously, and I got an F for my independent study until my sensei sorted it out and had it changed to a B. I'm not worthy of such kindness... T_T Still, it's done, and I'm happy! FREEDOOOOOOM!

JAPAN is almost a go??? O_O Another step completed in that process. Now, what happened to Korea, you ask? It's still there...XD; I don't want to decline that offer for employment until Japan gives me the yay or nay. Today was my phone screening interview for a program called Interac. I looked over the website yesterday and today to prepare, but they still called me an hour before I expected because they were in a different timezone. I was SUCH a nervous wreck for the first part, but fortunately, I calmed down. One of the advantages to having a phone interview in the kitchen is easy access to water. I must have drunk at least three cups. ^^; It actually went quite well! I can say this with confidence because at the end, the guy told me that he'd like to invite me to the seminar in San Francisco in October and that not many people get to go, so I should be proud. :excited: :boing: I was SO happy; you have no idea. For some reason, I wasn't that disappointed when I didn't get a JET interview earlier this year, but now I've realized that Japan is really where I want to be, so I want to succeed really bad. I know the seminar's going to be tough on me, but at least I have time to prepare. I'll have to have a more in-depth interview and give a short lesson, from what I know so far. They'll be sending me more info on that later.

The only downside to choosing Japan is that I won't get to go until March next year, so I have to keep myself occupied until then. Work with my dad is going well. He and my mom own a phone service company, so I've been going on calls with him out in the field. I've been getting a bit better at putting on jacks and running cables, but it's taxing work sometimes. Maybe I just need to get used to waking up early and working all day. Last week, I was on the floor for hours installing phone and internet jacks under the desks of this big company that just moved and my RIBS hurt so bad afterwards I thought they'd bruise.

Also, it's impossible to have nice nails with this job, fyi. A longer thumbnail is good for pushing wires into jack inserts, but if the others aren't short, there's peeling and breaking, and all kinds of nasty stuff. -_-; The appearance of my nails are one of my few girly concerns. What can you do?

It's hard to complain when my dad spoils me rotten and buys me all the junk my mom always chides me against. He's addicted to soda and I have a hard time saying no to all sorts of goodies that come my way. At least it motivates me to be more healthy when I'm at home? Sorta. I'm too tired to go to the gym on days I have to work, but on my free days, I have no good excuse. :P

ANYWAY, even that was longer than I meant to write for. This is probably the last journal entry I'll get to write while I'm still 21. There aren't any huge plans for my birthday on the 5th, but I'm sure it'll be fun. I can't wait! :boogie:

Till next time!

Here's your chance...to ask what you want! [Jul. 28th, 2009|12:32 am]
[Current Mood | pleased]

I haven't done a meme for a while, and I usually don't do ones like these, so I guess I'll give it a shot.

THREE QUESTIONS PER PERSON

You can ask me anything you want! Just as long as it's something I can actually answer...and doesn't make me wish I hadn't done this. ^^; In return, you *should* post this on your own journal and let people do the same to you, but I'm not going to push it if it makes you hesitate from participating.

Well, with that- fire away! :la:

AX Report, Part 2 [Jul. 21st, 2009|02:45 am]

[Current Mood | cold]

I feel like I'm going to epic fail at this because I've waited too long to write about it. >.> I'll do my best to bring up those memories though, but don't be surprised if I leave something out.

So Saturday...what a day. XD I remember waking up at a decent time, but it must not have been too early, because I don't remember doing anything until around noon or so. I think it just took me a while to get into my costume. I was Pit for the whole day! Mostly because I really love the costume and was excited to wear it again, but also because that was the day of the Brawl gathering. :boogie: I also went to the video game gathering. They were trying to break the world record for most video game cosplayers gathered in one place, but unfortunately didn't succeed. There were still a lot of people though! O_o Over a hundred...We had to check in and take a picture with everyone from the game we were representing. Then, they moved us to the shade so that we could have a big group picture afterwards. I really wanted to go to the Kingdom Hearts gathering, but I felt bad just leaving, so I hung around. I didn't know anyone, but they were a fun group all the same. Some epic Twilight Princess cosplayers got a lot of attention. There was also this creepy giant elevator that kept opening up. It was the size of a small garage! This guy in a loading cart kept coming in and out of it, and he gave a dirty look to the Ganondorf cosplayer that was pretending to enter "The Chamber." When it was finally time to take the picture (over half an hour later >_> ), there was this Sonic cosplayer that was running to get in the shot, and one person was like "You're too slooow!" in the same voice that Sonic uses for his taunt in Smash Bros. XD It was great. The photo shoot was long, so while we were waiting for the camera, everyone started singing random songs like the ending theme from Portal and Be A Man from Mulan. XD The people nearby probably got a kick out of that.

Finally it was over and I got a break. I think I went to the dealer's room for a while cuz there was still some time before Brawl (not a lot though) >.> I think I grabbed a sandwich from Subway that morning for "brunch." I remember eating it in the hotel room as Pit, lol. Stacy was nice enough to bring me back a soda from Panda Express which I chugged through the whole gathering. I was one thirsty angel! :P

The gathering was fun. I was kinda disappointed that the Kid Icarus people didn't get their own shot, though. They only did the big groups like Mario, Fire Emblem, Zelda, and the Mother games, but after that they were just like "OKAY, NOW EVERYONE ELSE." I did like the Alternate colors shot though. XD That one made me feel special since I was the only alternate Pit. Someone stole me for some solo shots later too. Stacy got a lot of nice ones! I've got the one with the sniper in it in my gallery. It cracked me up how he was RIGHT in that shot. :XD: Other memorable parts of the gathering were pink Captain falcon with his purple nipple buttons :lmao: and FABULOUS!Marth with her girly glasses, bag, and hand mirror. She was holding her sword all ditzy-like too and kept making funny faces in her shots. She was great~ XD

Saturday...WAS THE MASQUERADE! And wow, I actually got to sit through it all. Haven't done that since PMX (because I was in it). I don't remember much about what happened before that. It was probably more shopping and food. I had to go back to the hotel to change out of Pit so that I could actually sit down and enjoy the show without taking up two seats for the wingspan. The show wasn't amazing but it was entertaining enough for me. The walk-on cosplays were AWESOME. O_O Really amazing craftsmanship, but probably not something you'd want people bumping into in the dealer's hall. XD Like the AMVs, the Masquerade went on a REALLY long time, and by the half-time show, I was nodding off. It was some kind of Japanese rock/pop band so it was loud, but I felt like I was going to pass out anyway. I tried to use the gummi colas to keep me awake. XD They read out all the winners of various contests that had been going on, but I didn't pay much attention to that either. I really just wanted to be able to say that I had stayed through the whole thing. ^^; Plus, I DID want to know who won the Masquerade. >.>

Afterwards, I was still tired, but I didn't want to head back right away (and face epic shuttle lines) so I went to the Manga Cafe and read some Orphen. Couldn't stay long, though, cuz it closed at midnight, so I was forced to face epic shuttle line anyway. It really wasn't that bad, though, and I got back to the hotel at a decent time. I'm pretty sure I just showered and went to bed cuz I was too exhausted to try to get into the dance. It was a really fun day, though. x3

Sunday was kinda mellow in comparison. I had to face con drama in the morning, though cuz we had to check out before noon and my main roommate, the head of our group, wasn't there. She left early in the morning to get a last minute autograph and we had to check out and haul her stuff out of there with the help of her guy friend. I got caught in the middle cuz I was the only one with a cell phone. DX Glad to help the people who were so kind to me, of course but still, I wasn't able to get to the con in the morning at all. I was stuck with my luggage in the lobby for a while until Chan was able to pick me up and let me dump it in her car, but I had my DS, so I didn't mind. I just played Fire Emblem in the lobby dressed as Pit until she arrived. :3 I even saw a Marth cosplayer I recognized from the gathering the day before, and she got my picture. I was so happy to have somewhere to put my stuff when Chan got there, and she wanted to go to a comic book store in the area, so she dropped me off at the con, and I went for a last minute sweep of the dealer's hall and artist alley, getting stopped for plenty of photos along the way. I didn't find anything that I wanted to buy really bad, but some awesome person in the artist alley did give me something I was actually looking for (but didn't even have to ask for!). It's this little Pit keychain that she gave me cuz she liked my costume. :w00t!: I actually found a picture of it on DA from her account [link] I was so excited to have it and still have it hanging by my bed. It was a nice end to an awesome con.

One of my favorite parts about my Pit cosplay is the variety of people it attracts. XD I had everyone from really young kids to middle-aged men, lol. One kid made me feel really special just from how excited he was to see me and giving me compliments. I won't lie- I love to show off something I've worked so hard on. I think cosplay is one of the most rewarding hobbies I have because I put so much thought and effort into it and get a lot in return. I really like using my creativity to piece together my favorite characters and bring them to life in the real world. :XD: Being Pit felt great because I felt like it really fit me and I was able to get into character, which is not always easy to do. I know I have trouble as Edgeworth because he's so much wittier than I can manage to be, but the funny thing about Pit is that he doesn't have a lot of character development, so I can kinda just make it up. XD He does seem like a happy character to me, though, and I have no trouble bringing that part out when I'm cosplaying him. ^^

Anyway, that's enough rambling out of me. I hope you've enjoyed this report (if you actually read through all that, you deserve a plate of cookies). I like documenting everything so I remember it later. I hope the next AX is even more fun. I know I'll be looking forward to it for months to come. Catcha later~

AX Report, Part 1 [Jul. 15th, 2009|01:55 am]

[Current Mood | cheerful]

This is long overdue. ^^; Hopefully, I haven't forgotten too many of the details! I had a great time in LA this year, even though it went by super fast. I can't believe it's already been more than a week. I prepared for it for so long, and now it's over. T_T Ah, well, there's always next year? :XD:

The last two weeks before AX were pretty much all dedicated to my new cosplay. This year, I chose to do Pit from Super Smash Bros. Brawl!!! :boogie: See my gallery for some pics. I cosplayed the green alternate version for a couple of reasons. Everyone always seems to do either the regular white one or the dark "fallen angel" version, so I wanted to stand out a little and try something different. Green Pit is also my favorite version and the one I use all time when I play Brawl. Some people like to call him "Christmas Pit" because of the green toga and red scarf. He was a pain in the butt to make! I started gathering materials very early on, so I had everything assembled by the time I actually started putting it together. The shoes took me the longest because I had to hand sew EVERYTHING. The sewing machine was no help at all for those because the material was so thick and the angles were hard to work with. I think they came out pretty good, though, even though they weren't perfect. One of them is too easy to get on, the other too difficult. I had to turn them over to my mom at one point because I just had too many other things to work on. The swords were very interesting to make because I had to work with a lot of model magic, but I made the mistake of not having a lot of support along the sides so the swords were constantly breaking in the middle throughout the con. I was smart enough to bring an emergency repair kit that included a hot glue gun, so I was able to fix anything that gave me trouble. My favorite part of the swords were the magnets that held them together for when I wanted to use it as a bow. The reactions I got from people when they found out I could take them apart and put them together again were priceless. I also had a little too much fun finding out what metallic things I could stick them to, like the tables at Johnny Rocket's.

I arrived in LA on Day 0, the day before the con officially started. I flew in from San Francisco and got roped into taking a shuttle from the ground transportation area. It was probably the cheapest way anyhow, but it's kinda scary the way the people there make you feel committed to taking their shuttles. I was just walking by, and the guy is like "Where are you going?" and after I tell him, he writes it down gets a shuttle for me. Better than what happened to my poor friend, Stacy, who got tricked into taking a private car that ended up costing $70. :( Hugs for Stacy~ It was an interesting ride because over half the people who got in with me were con-goers. Most of them were anti-social though expect maybe the ones in the way back, so I didn't get to talk with anyone.

I got to the hotel before the rest of my group. I had been talking to someone online who found my post in the forums and invited me to join her room. She ended up being a very kind and friendly person. She even paid for my con registration! Her group was nice too. None of us became very close, but at least they were fun to be around. I was going between different groups of people for the whole con, so I didn't hang out with them the whole time. Before they got there, I was hanging out in the lobby until Stacy invited me to meet up with her. I left my luggage in her room, and we all walked to the con center to register. It was a long line! I was not expecting that at all because last year, we were barely there 10 min because it was Day 0. This year, everyone had the same idea to register early, so we were there for what felt like almost two hours. The staff was super considerate though; they even had a bottle of sunscreen that they shared with everyone in line and there with people with misters too to help us cool down. After registering, we went to California Pizza kitchen where I gorged on an entire mushroom pizza. I was starving, so it really hit the spot. Special thanks to Stacy's fiancee, Steve for feeding me! :D It was soooo good.

I met up with my hotel roommates later that night, and we got acquainted and wandered around the hotel and across the way to Johnny Rocket's, even though I think it ended up being full or about to close. One of the most convenient food sources during the whole con was the Subway located right in our hotel. I must have had at least three meals from there. It was just so cheap and delicious! @w@ Just one more thing about the Westin that's awesome. I really do love that hotel. The atmosphere and rooms are perfect. Well, the size of the rooms are a bit on the small side, but they're plenty big enough for four people that don't do much except sleep there and change in and out of costumes. My junk took up a good chunk of the floor by the bathroom and some closet space, but overall, it wasn't too bad.

Thursday was the first official day of the con. I went to the opening ceremony with my hotel roomies. Ever since last year, it seems like a requirement for any AX. It really helps kick it off. You get to see all the guests of honor! I didn't know most of them, but it was still cool. All the events seemed to run behind schedule, so we were waiting a long time for it to start, but it really wasn't so bad. Con excitement and new friends make it a whole lot easier. XD

I was cosplaying Edgeworth for most of the day cuz I didn't want to whip Pit out right away. I met up with Stacy's group for a bit and then headed back to the room to change out for some of the panels that I wanted to go to that would be hard to participate in while in cosplay. It felt so wrong being at a con out of costume though, so I grabbed a few pieces of Pit like the arm band and glove to make me feel better. I even tried out the blue eye contacts. Coolest thing ever! Though they kept sliding around...It still looked awesome. The first panel I went to was a Ballroom Instruction Panel. I figured it was something I never get to do (mostly because no one else wants to do it with me :P ) and I had time, so why not? I was actually planning on going to the Cosplay Masquerade Ball, but it didn't end up happening. :( The class was interesting though! XD We learned how to waltz and jive.

FUNNIEST THING EVER: They hired this random dance instructor to run to panel. They told him what he'd be teaching but failed to mention exactly who he would be teaching it TO. So this guy comes in and is like...O_o He was totally cool about it though, and even got a lot of amusement out of it. He was using people as examples and being all like "Okay, you ninja guy come hold onto bikini girl..." There was also this toy gun he kept stealing out of the back of this one girl's pants where it was sticking out and he would fire it to get our attention. The panel itself was a lot of fun. It made me realize how much I fail at dance classes in general. I really just need to be able to follow someone as they do the steps the same time as me; if I try to watch someone do it before trying myself, I usually just mess it up. ^^; I learned a few moves though and avoided stepping on too many toes. I had to dance with a lot of random guys (some better-smelling than others), but it was an interesting experience to say the least. This one guy was confused about which of my hands he was supposed grab when he finished his solo jive turn, and I was just like "Just grab the GLOVED one." :XD:

After the dance panel/class, I took a one hour break and wondered around the con, mostly checking out the dealer's hall and artist alley, which they put in the same giant room this year. I went for this one T-shirt booth right away because there was this brown shirt with a kitty in a big cup of boba that I wanted to get at Fanime, but couldn't because they ran out of my size. I love that shirt! It's my tradition to get one at every con, so I was glad I was able to accomplish that right away. I also found some really cool pins from the game The World Ends With You (a must-play if you own a DS). There was a pack of six with all the pins that I wanted for $5. I was so happy! XD I put them on my messenger bag's strap.

The next panel I went to was called Art of the Glowstick. I didn't realize there was a whole subculture dedicated to twirling these things around, but apparently there is! Seems like a cool community too. They told us a bit about what they were about, and after, they showed us some moves. I was too cheap to buy any glowsticks though, so I didn't actually get to try them out. They are stored in the memory though. XD

I went back to the con and had dinner with the roomies. First though, I couldn't resist giving Pit a test run. I wore him to Johnny Rocket's and then to the con afterwards, even though it was already late and there wasn't much going on. I loved being in the costume! It gave me a chance to figure out what was going to give me trouble later. The scarf kept shifting around, so I used safety pins on it later to keep it in place. I had to learn the hard way to watch out for the thigh band though; the model magic kept breaking there too as well as the swords. At least I had the hot glue gun ready. I went to the karaoke room with the hotel roomies later that night, but it was still a while before open mic, so I didn't get to sing anything. My contacts also gave me trouble, and I had to go back to the room for a bit because one fell out. It was funny because I still got stopped for photos as Pit even though I had one blue eye in and the other floating in a cup of water. I changed out of Pit and went to the dance for a while with Stacy's group, but I couldn't stay long because it was already almost 2am, and I had an early start the next day.

Friday was a hectic day. We went to a secret event that I'm not really supposed to talk about, but let's just say it was a lot of fun and I got a free breakfast out of it. ;P The rest of the morning was a bit hectic because I had two different groups of friends to coordinate, so I was playing some phone tag/hide and seek. I picked up Paul and his friend from the gaming room and headed toward the dealer's hall to meet up with Chan and Suupi. Everyone was kinda running around in different directions, but we had a good time. I went to the Phoenix Wright gathering as Edgeworth and had a very fun photo shoot. The Mike Meekins cosplayer was the best part. He was very in-character and even had a megaphone (which thankfully stayed off). There was a lot of Gumshoe and Phoenix abuse when it came to the photos, but there were also some funny ones like Oldbag and Red White's romantic scene and Apollo using his Chords of Steel on Mike Meekin's megaphone. There was also a Joker cosplayer from Batman that got pulled in to a scene with him holding dynamite and the police force freaking out. It was great.

After the Phoenix Wright gathering, I went back to the hotel to change into Pit. I was so excited to get to wear him "officially." He was very well received right off the bat. The first time I wore him, I had barely taken 5 steps off the hotel shuttle bus before someone asked for a photo. This time, I got caught at the top of the escalators near the entrance because I started posing for people and more and more cameras came. ^^; When I tried to pick my stuff up to go, I had to set it down again and pose again. It was a fun ride.

I eventually met up with everyone again and trekked around the dealer's hall for a bit. Then, Chan, Suupi, and I went to the VIZ panel to see what was coming out. It's been a while since I've seriously collected any manga (too broke T.T ), but it was still interesting. They talked about Kakashi Gaiden!!! I already knew the animation was on its way, but I didn't realize it was already coming in August! I can't wait! :D I'm so excited to hear everyone's voices and see how they adapt the manga to anime.

I had to change out of Pit before the AMV Contest, so I went back to the hotel again. I asked Chan and Suupi to save me a seat because they were already in line and I still needed to eat dinner. I grabbed a burger to go and found Stacy's group, so I didn't have to wait in line by myself. I met up with the others when I was inside and we sat through the whole contest and voted at the end. The entries were really great! It was long though, because there were 7 entries for each category: romance, drama, comedy, and pro. We were there until way late, and I was nodding off by the last vid because I had woken up so early and kept going to bed late. It was still very cool to get to sit through it all though. I usually don't get to attend full events at other cons.

My hands hurt now, and soon this entry is going to get too long for you to bother to finish reading, so I'll save the second half of this report for later. There's still Sat and Sun to talk about! I can't believe how much of this con I remember even though it's been more than a week! XD I guess it's hard to forget this much fun. :boogie: Anyways, till next time!

Farewell, College T_T [May. 22nd, 2009|07:41 pm]

It was nice knowing you! D: Aww, it's really hard to believe that I'm not going to be a student anymore. I have known NO OTHER WAY. O_O But, the fun part about life is that you never stop learning, so even if this adventure is over, I'm sure a newer, more exciting one is about to begin. It's time for every graduate's favorite question- "SOOO, what are you going to do with your life?" Well, I've got the same basic plan that a lot of people do- hunt around for work, find something that fits and I love, and maybe then even go back to school for a little bit. I really would like to get my Masters in Creative Writing eventually, but I also want some time on my own to actually work on stuff since school makes it so hard to find time. D: I also have more solid post-graduation plans than most people. I'm about halfway through applying to teach English in Korea for a year, and it's not looking bad at all. The recruiter said once the school reviews my application, they'll schedule a second interview which is really more like a chance to get to know me, find out my preferences, and answer my questions. The idea of teaching there is starting to sound REALLY EXCITING. Even if I don't speak a word of Korean...hmm :\Time to study some Hangul. Oh, does that count as a word? XDDD Then how about kimchi?

Graduation ceremony is ridiculously early tomorrow. D: I guess it's a good thing after hearing how hot last year's was. At least the weather will still be pretty mild even if the whole congregation is nodding off. :XD: My family's here already. They drove down from North Cal this morning and got here later in the afternoon while I was running around trying to get the last things off my to-do list done. I still have bloody scratches on my arm from carrying my Link bust all the way from the sculpture lab to my apartment (an ordeal in which my arms were sacrificed). I returned the red baskets from the cafeteria that I've been keeping hostage for pretty much the whole year. My room is still a total wreck (probably scared the family), but I really don't have a lot to pack, so I'm working on that tonight. After I get off work though, I'm trudging my way to Tokyo Cafe in these heels. Today was the baccalaureate service in the Interfaith center so I had to dress all nice and wear my grad gear (most of which I forgot anyway). ^^; Tomorrow I'll be all decked out though in my Japan study abroad sash, so I'm excited.

I also get to meet friends tomorrow! It's going to be so sad to say goodbye! :crying: I really hope we all keep in touch, even though our lives may go in very different directions. There will also be my own personal guests of honor attending. My bff, the SWIRLINATOR, is coming plus one, shall we say, significant other. ;P I'm psyched to be the center of attention. Part of me's like, "But what did I do to deserve this festivity?" O_O I think it just hasn't sunk in yet that I've actually completed college and am done with most if not all of my formal education for pretty much life. :XD: My independent study may be to blame. The story I've been translating is taking me much longer than expected, and of course, the time I need help the most, everyone's busy with finals. *Sigh* But what can you do? I'm just going to keep working on it over the summer and making it even better than it would have otherwise been. Maybe I'll even add some pictures and post them up here. :D

BUT MAYBE FANIME HAS STOLEN THE ATTENTION! I'm ridiculously excited for this con, mostly because I didn't get to go last year. I also get to forgo the long drive home in favor of a quick flight from Santa Ana to San Jose. It's going to be awesome!!! It's too bad I only get to go for one day, but it'll be a great one. I'm wearing Edgeworth since he is still the newest one and easier to transport than some of my other costumes. Young Kakashi will most likely make a reappearance for Anime Expo, though, along with the debut of PIT! Well, when I actually finish him. I can't wait to work on him. :)

That's all I've got for you know. The next time you hear from me, I'll probably be home. It's been an awesome four years, and DA has definitely been a part of that experience. I'm glad it's one thing I can take with me no matter where I end up. x3 Laters!

P.S.- Checked out the Avatar movie pics?

They're BACK! My babies are back! Ok, you have no idea what I'm taking about. I've been pretty freaked out/depressed about what's been happening with my laptop lately. First the trojans kick me out, then I overdraw on my bank account trying to buy the external enclosure that will help me get my files off my hard drive and onto another computer, then when the thing actually comes and I hook it up to another computer, the folder that has all my files in it says ACCESS DENIED, but it's okay now, because the help desk fixed it so I can get my files out! *happy dance* :boogie:

I seriously thought I was going to lose everything. All the stories I've written since high school, all the hundreds of photos I took (including the ones from Japan), all my music, and everything else that means anything to me on that laptop...I'm just so happy that it didn't turn out that way. ^^;

hugs for EVERYONE :hug::hug::hug::hug::hug:

Update on Korea [May. 2nd, 2009|01:25 pm]

So I had my phone interview yesterday. It was a bit nerve-wracking. I skipped on weight training class so I would have more time to prepare. The good thing about phone interviews is that you can write down stuff for yourself to look over in case you get stuck on a question. I typed out some of my responses to the questions I thought they were going to ask, what I hoped to gain from the experience, my qualifications, ect. I looked over it plenty of times, and by the time my interview rolled around, I really didn't even need it. XD Good tip for the future.

In a lot of ways, the phone interview was harder too. I couldn't see my interviewer's face, so I didn't know if what I was saying had a positive or negative effect on her besides what I could hear from her voice and responses. At the same time, I was glad she couldn't see ME when I had my "oh crap" moments. ^^; There was a question I got stuck on really bad because I'm horrible at remembering specific events that happened at work. I try to keep my jobs as problem-free as possible, so when she asked, "Describe a time, you faced a challenge at work and had to resolve it." I was like, "Ummmmm..." I could give plenty of general examples, but nothing specific. I tried like 3 different scenarios from all the jobs on my resume, until FINALLY, I remembered a slight issue I had with someone that had a really heavy accent and had to write down the name of the film he wanted so I could find it for him. That was good enough, it seemed, so we were finally able to move on.

The role-playing part was the part I was the most worried about. It really didn't end up being that bad. I had to pretend to be a teacher and explain the difference between staring and glaring. PIECE OF CAKE. I got some good feedback at the end of the role play. The only thing I probably should have done differently was use the student's name (I didn't remember it anyways...bad teacher, bad!). I thought it was funny because I was expecting something like my friend's JET interview, where the interviewers turned into little kids to make the scenario more realistic. XD This lady was very serious, though.
Me: *happy teacher voice* Do you know the difference between staring and glaring?
Interviewer: *monotone* No, teacher. I do not.

:XD: I hope the kids are more enthusiastic than that; otherwise, I'll be teaching robots. O_o I'm actually getting pretty excited about it now, even though I'm still not 100% sure I'd choose it over anything else that comes up before I graduate. I still want to keep my options open.

Still, it felt good to check my email this morning and get my interview results saying they think I'd be a good candidate. The next step of the process is applying to the school they want to set me up with.

In the meantime, I'm still sending out apps and following up with the ones that are out there already. I fell much less pessimistic about life after college than I did before. At least now I know I can get through an interview okay. Wish me luck~
